Mantis are best used as Boarding crew, as their increased damage and increased movement speed allow them to disrupt and destroy enemy systems and crew. Human children are told tales of their red ships, and of the Mantis invasion of Earth. Though some individual Mantes have been known to work with the Galactic Federation, the race as a whole tends to be deceptive, opportunistic, and untrustworthy, and can commonly be found piloting their signature style of well-armed spacecraft, hunting down weaker enemies in pursuit of their belongings. Engi slaves can be found on a majority of their bases and ships.

They have overcome this problem by frequently taking Engi slaves. While Mantis excel at combat, especially personal combat, they are the least adept of all the races at technical repairs. The Mantis also possess extremely acidic saliva which can burn through flesh and melt most metal alloys. While humans and most other species have manufactured handheld weaponry to utilize in combat, the Mantis usually default to their agility and sharpened exoskeletal appendages to tear through their enemies, and their skill as warriors goes almost unchallenged in 1v1 combat, even against the rock species. Whereas praying mantes kill prey merely to survive, the much larger and more intelligent Mantis race kill remorselessly to suit their own personal agendas - usually without survival as a concern, making for a pitiless and brutal insectoid warrior species. The violent and hostile Mantis appear, to Humans anyway, to resemble man-sized Praying Mantes, although they are much more aggressive than their namesakes.
#Ftl mantis upgrade
I'll often get my "full build" ready by sector 4 or 5 and not really need to upgrade anything for the next 4 sectors. The Mantis disregard for individual lives led to their evolution as a vicious warrior race. Honestly, once you get 4 Mantis and a cloak you are pretty much set for the rest of the game. You don't really need to buy more than 1 weapon, and you don't really need to buy much reactor power since you won't be using guns. It already has level 2 shields and already has a teleporter and a drone. oh wait, doesn't matter, it's dead before it can fire.Īnyway, the nice thing about the ship is you really don't need much scrap at all. Doesn't matter, you already won.Įnemy ship has 4 sheilds? Doesn't matter one bit, still dies in seconds.Įnemy ship has 8 crew inside of it? Lol, they all still die in seconds.Įnemy ship has 4 rocket launchers? Oh no!. You just need to get past the first 2-3 sectors and pick up those extra 2 Mantis, then you literally don't care about what the enemy is. You send them over all at once at you will eviscerate the entire enemy crew in honestly under 10 seconds, it's not even fair. You should have four Mantis, all of them level 2 combat.

It all pays off by sector 5 or so though. Med bay in sector one? Run away, etc, etc. Realize that you will have to run from a decent number of fights early on. I usually find a good rocket launcher or a burst laser in the first 3 sectors. You need something to kill the AI drones.
#Ftl mantis plus
Ideally you want to get 4 mantis ASAP, plus a whatever race to pilot. You need at minimum someone to pilot, plus you need to more boarders. In the first 2 sectors you have to get lucky and get ~3 more crew. The Mantis B is immensely powerful and late game is probably the best ship in the game.
